A deliciously imaginative story about friendship-from the author - illustrator of The Scrambled States of America. Arnie was fascinated as he watched the customers stream into the bakery. One by one, doughnuts were chosen, placed in paper bags, and whisked away with their new owners. Some went by the dozen in giant boxes. "Good-bye!" Arnie yelled to each doughnut. "Have a good trip!" "This is so exciting!" Arnie beamed. "I wonder who will choose ME?" At first glance, Arnie looks like an average doughnut-round, cakey, with a hole in the middle, iced and sprinkled. He was made by one of the best bakeries in town, and admittedly his sprinkles are candy-colored. Still, a doughnut is just a doughnut, right? WRONG! Not if Arnie has anything to say about it. And, for a doughnut, he sure seems to have an awful lot to say. Can Arnie change the fate of all doughnuts-or at least have a hand in his own future? Well, you'll just have to read this funny story and find out for yourself.

The art of teaching science : . inquiry and innovation in middle school and high school / . Wendy Kopp with Steven Farr.

Description: America's failure to educate millions of children is a crisis that strikes at our fundamental ideals and health as a nation. Since 1990, Teach For America has been building a movement to end educational inequity in America. Now its founder, Wendy Kopp, shares the lessons learned from the experiences of more than 25,000 teachers and alumni who have taught and led schools in low-income communities . This book cuts through the noise of today's debates to describe what it will take to provide transformational education--education that changes the academic and life trajectories predicted by children's socioeconomic backgrounds. Kopp's experiences and insights also shine light on why we have not made more progress against educational inequity--how and why the misguided quest for easy answers actually distracts from the hard work--and on what we need to do now to increase the pace of change.--From publisher description.

Charles Darwin / . . by Kathleen Krull ; illustrated by Boris Kulikov.

Description: Traces the life and work of the British biologist made famous by his controversial theory of natural selection.

Charles Dickens and the street children of London / . . by Andrea Warren.

Description:

Classroom management that works . . produced by ASCD ; producer, Maria D'Arcangelo ; director, Dana Sheets ; writers, Marcia D'Arcangelo, Dana Sheets.

Description: "[Program 1] shows how teachers get off to a good start with a new class by establishing rules and procedures involving students in setting these expectations for behavior. This book offers an understanding of how cognition and learning theory applies to an online learning environment. Through behaviorist, constructivist, and cognitive approaches it provides strategies for incorporating this knowledge into effective learner-centered teaching practice. Each chapter contains reflection and discussion questions and, with the use of the accompanying CD, can be used for self-directed learning. It is ideal for new instructors or those new to online teaching."--

Emma-Jean Lazarus fell out of a tree / . . by Lauren Tarshis.

Description: A quirky and utterly logical seventh-grade girl named Emma-Jean Lazarus discovers some interesting results when she gets involved in the messy everyday problems of her peers.

Emotional intelligence and enterprise handbook : . tools and techniques to help students succeed in life and work / . Mark J. Garrison.

Description: This work deals with how and why standardized tests have become the ubiquitous standard by which educational achievement and intelligence are measured. How did standardized tests become the measure of performance in our public schools? In this work, the author attempts to answer this question by analyzing the development of standardized testing, from the days of Horace Mann and Alfred Binet to the current scene. Approaching the issue from a sociohistorical perspective, the author demonstrates the ways standardized testing has been used to serve the interests of the governing class by attaching a performance-based value to people and upholding inequality in American society. The book also discusses the implications that a restructuring of standardized testing would have on the future of education, specifically what it could do to eliminate the measure of individual worth based on performance.

The Midwest / . . Richard Louv.

Description: In this book the author argues that a strong connection to nature is essential for human health. Supported by research, anecdotal evidence, and personal stories, the author shows how tapping into the restorative powers of the natural world can boost mental acuity and creativity; promote health and wellness; build smarter and more sustainable businesses, communities, and economies; and ultimately strengthen human bonds. He outlines seven precepts he calls the "Nature Principle", which include balancing technology excess with time in nature; a mind/body/nature connection, which he calls "vitamin N," that enhances physical and mental health; expanding our sense of community to include all living things; and purposefully developing a spiritual, psychological, physical attachment to a region and its natural history. The book presents examples of these precepts, from studies of how exposure to a common soil bacteria increases production of serotonin in the brain to designing shopping malls inspired by termite mounds.

The official YALSA awards guidebook / . . compiled and edited by Tina Frolund for the Young Adult Library Services Association.

Description:

Oh, the places you'll go! / . . by Dr. Seuss.

Description:

Otis / . . The authors examine why teachers choose to read Harry Potter, how they use the books and incorporate new media, and the resulting teacher-student interactions. The book encourages a critical discussion regarding the state of our educational system and the increasing lack of space allowed for imagination and complexity. Its unique research methodology is part ethnographic, part practitioner research, and serves as an analytical commentary on current school culture and policy"--

Teaching kids to love learning, not just endure it / . .
